The first day we landed in Australia we made a beeline to the rental car and immediately drove north out of Sydney. We were headed for the Port Stephens area based entirely on Jane's love of dolphins and the Lonely Planet guide. We spent several days in the Nelson Bay area (highly recommended, including the hike up Tomaree Head), before heading back to Sydney via the Hunter Valley (one of the top wine producing areas near Sydney). If you get a chance, and end up in the Hunter Valley, drive through it and find Putty Road (our dolphin watch boat captain recommended it to me and it was one of the best drives I've ever done.)
