IPSEC L2TP VPN on Ubuntu 14.04 with OpenSwan, xl2tpd and ppp. Easy to setup on a cheap VPS from Linode or Digital Ocean, then you can run all of your traffic through it and not have to worry about advertising injections and crap from random wifi. Of course your mileage may vary, I've had some free wifi (Atlanta airport) that will not let you use a VPN, which sucks.
