Moab 2005: Needles District: Cryptobiotic Soil

Monticello, UT       2005-11-25

Cryptobiotic soil growing in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. This black crust is actually created by organisms that hold in the moisture, allowing desert plants to take root. If you see this type of soil on your visit, do NOT disturb it as it can take hundreds of years to grow back.
