Common Problems and Solutions for Nvidia restricted drivers after Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Upgrade. I did have to set my xorg.conf file back to the "nv" driver to get back into X-windows. Then I just ran the package manager to search for "177" and installed the nVidia bits, then ran the "nvidia-settings" program and restarted X, everything was good after that.
