It gets very hot in Beijing in the summer, upwards of 30 (celcius) daily. Hence people seek shade anywhere they can (and it's not uncommon to see many people carrying umbrellas on warm, sunny days). These people were trying hard to stay out of the sun in Tiananmen Square.
