Easily check your IP address with Perl. This does require access to checkmyip.com (which obviously requires internet access.) I've been doing my own version of checkmyip on my own servers, partly so I can check from my laptop when I travel and partly to have something I can automate with cron from home in case my home IP changes while I'm away, I'll still be able to get to my home server.
