Many of the costs are insidious, Roza has found, “buried in unidentifiable places.” For example, when teacher-coaches travel for game days, schools need to hire substitute teachers. They also need to pay for buses for the team, the band, and the cheerleaders, not to mention meals and hotels on the road. For home games, schools generally cover the cost of hiring officials, providing security, painting the lines on the field, and cleaning up afterward. “Logistics are a big challenge,” says Jared Bigham, until recently the supervising principal of two schools in Copperhill, Tennessee, and a former teacher, coach, and player. “Even though the coaches are in charge of the budgets, I still have to oversee them and approve each expenditure. You’re looking at 10 different budgets you have to manage.”#>
Flood Disaster Trail Repair Fund. I'd be a lot more inclined to donate if Boulder wasn't such asses about charging non-Boulder residents parking at the trailheads. Why not take the parking fees and use that? (Yeah, I'm bitter. I live in Jefferson County, which has the most Open Space available in Colorado (and my taxes reflect that) and we don't charge people to park and use our Open Space.) #>
Kinetic Sand. This stuff is very cool, unfortunately our puppy decided to eat half a package of it. Which resulted in something that looked like little sand poops in the yard (clearly the stuff is non-toxic...)
Been working with a couple of HP Touchpads that I'd rooted some time ago, trying to bring them up to CyanogenMod 10.2 levels. For some reason I couldn't get the gapps package to take, it just never installed anything besides Google Mail (which I don't use anyway.)
Turns out the solution was to boot the tablet to USB-mode (holding down volume button down while booting), then installing ACMEinstaller3 (using "novacom.exe boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller3".) This churned for a while then rebooted. After installing that I was able to flash the latest CM 10.2 nightly and the Google Apps and everything is running great.
From my readings online I discovered that CM 10 requires an expansion of the /system partition (at the cost of /media), and ACMEInstaller3 takes care of that resizing. #>
What killed BlackBerry? Employees started buying their own devices. I don't find this true for me, I loved my Blackberry's keyboard and the battery lasted almost a week. What killed it for me was a mandate from corporate IT that the BES servers were being retired and everyone had to select an Android or iPhone. No internal revolt here, this was a mandate from on high (not that I have an issue with it now, but I do still miss that keyboard.) #>
Contraband Confection. I've had a customs officer in Houston tell me I "shouldn't have those" but let them in, and I've had a customs officer in Toronto be the biggest dick I've ever seen about them. Pretty ridiculous situation for some candy. #>
