Dan Heller's Photography Business Blog. Worth keeping an eye on.     #>

Life of a Geolocated Blog Post, an excellent tutorial on how to get a set of photos (and your online posting) synced to a GPS track log.     #>

JScreenFix for Stuck pixels on LCD screens. As long as the pixel isn't totally dead you might be able to get it back with this.     #>

Yesterday I picked up a Motorola H700 bluetooth headset from a guy on Craigs List. Today I set about pairing it to my Kensington bluetooth adaptor on my work laptop. My goal was to get it to work with Skype, making phone calls home MUCH easier when I'm on the road (when I spent those 6 weeks in Amsterdam I talked to Jane every day via Skype.) I followed these directions: This is how to make a Bluetooth headset work with XP SP2 (or should I say a subset of these instructions since I already had the Widcom drivers installed) and whammo, it started working first try. Now I don't have to be tied to my horrible laptop microphone, I can freely wander the hotel room while chit-chatting away. This will also come in handy during those trips when I just plain forget my cell phone, which has happened before...     #>

The Billionaire Next Door: The Wisdom of Warren Buffett. There's a LOT of video embedded in there (thank goodness for Flashblock so I only see it when I'm ready for it), but it's worth working your way through.     #>

Silent Star Wars. Impressive, Star Wars edited into black and white as a silent film (complete with vignetting at the corners!) Only 1:15 long, but pretty good.     #>

Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring, that's a new one on me, I'd never heard of it before. Found it via a link from SysReq key explanation.     #>

Amazon mystery: pricing of books

I decided on a test. I added a bunch of books, most of them newly published, most of them obscure, to my shopping baskets with both Amazon and its British affiliate, Amazon.co.uk.

On Dec. 15, I checked my shopping baskets. Nine of the U.S. books had increased in price; three had decreased. At the British branch, nine had increased and none had decreased.

At least they did notify him, but as he points out it was a one-time message at the top of his shopping cart, not something you'd see unless you were looking for it.     #>

The Private Arm of the Law

Some warn, too, that the constitutional safeguards that cover police questioning and searches do not apply in the private sector. In Boston, tenants groups have complained that "special police," hired by property managers to keep low-income apartment complexes orderly, were overstepping their bounds, arresting young men who lived there for trespassing.

In 2005, three of the private officers were charged with assault after they approached a man talking on a cellphone outside his front door. They asked for identification and, when he refused, followed him inside and beat him in front of his wife and three children.

Gear Review : Energy bars, the quantitative view, not the normal bars like you find in the grocery store. Actually I don't know where you'd buy any of the ones he lists except for the Lara Bar, those are at REI.     #>

Build your own Ring flash, using styrofoam, foil, cardboard, tape, and some patience.     #>

HDR 101. I've tried using Photomatix and while I can get a very nice screen display of my photos I never seem to be able to get the output the same, the scenes usually come out pitch black. For some reason when I save the image it just dumps all the work I did and gives me a crap result.     #>

Window Managers for X, they list pretty much every window manager for Unix that I've heard about, if you click on one you want to see they also have screen shots.     #>

MyTopo, custom printed topo maps on waterproof paper. While I generally like the National Geographic TOPO! series of software (and of course the adventure paper), I find the $100/per state to be prohibitive if I'm just making a weekend visit to a new place. This sounds like a good alternative.     #>

Energy Saving (and Marketing) Tip #25: Do your business before you fly. I generally try to not have to use the airplane restroom anyway, I was on a recent trip where I literally could not turn around to face the toilet after closing the door, and while I'm not the skinniest person ever I'm far from the biggest person who flies...     #>

Most visited national parks. Huh, nothing in Colorado made the list, but that may just be an accessibility issue:

One of the things that jumped out at me was what is considered a national park. I believe all the most highly visited parks are actually highways. I assume that's the case for Golden Gate NRA. I know it's the case for the parkways (PKWY). I'm curious whether the states get more funding based on these statistics or whether it is the other way around. They generate more funding because they charge people who drive on these highways.

Gear Review : Adventure bikes

With tires that are nearly 4 inches wide—twice the width found on most mountain bikes—adventure bikes have better float in snow and sand. They are made to carry a load on racks and in panniers for cyclists heading into the wilderness.
